Vivi trains carried 16.2 million passengers in nine months; 98.6% of trips completed on time

12.09.2025

In the first nine months of 2025, 16.2 million passengers used the services of the train passenger carrier Vivi, an increase of 1.7 million or 11% compared to 14.5 million passengers in the same period last year. At the same time, the punctuality of trains - a measure that reflects the on-time completion of trips according to the timetable - was 98.6% during the period, maintaining Vivi's position among the most punctual train passenger carriers in Europe.

In September, passenger numbers continued to increase on the electrified railway lines where the new Vivi electric trains operate. In the nine-month period, Riga-Tukums remains the most popular route with 5.9 million passengers and an 11% increase compared to the same period last year. The Skulte direction has also continued its strong growth, with a 16% increase.

As autumn sets in, September has seen a significant increase in passenger traffic compared to August in the Aizkraukle direction, where almost 64 thousand more passengers were carried, and in the Jelgava direction, where the number of passengers increased by more than 44 thousand. In response to the rapid increase in demand, six new trips operate on the Riga-Jelgava line from 22 September during the weekday peak hours, when passenger traffic is at its highest. They are provided by diesel trains, as additional electric train trips cannot be operated on this line due to modernisation works of the electrified network of VAS "Latvijas Dzelzceļš".

In the first nine months of this year, positive dynamics can also be observed on non-electrified railway lines - the number of passengers in the Sigulda direction has increased by 14%, and in the Daugavpils direction - by 7%. The number of passengers on the Lugazi-Valga route has more than doubled, confirming the growing interest of the population in convenient international train connections in the Baltic States.

In September, more than 2,500 "Riga Single Tickets" were also sold, which allow you to save one euro per journey when using both the services of the train passenger carrier Vivi and the transport of "Rīgas satiksme". Almost half of them were purchased by passengers on the Riga-Tukums route, almost a quarter of tickets were sold on the Riga-Skulte route, 15% on the Riga-Jelgava route and 12% on the Riga-Aizkraukle route.

To improve accessibility and facilitate planning, interval timetables are gradually being introduced, with trains running at regular intervals - for example, every 15 or 30 minutes. This 15-minute interval timetable has been introduced in the direction of Jurmala, making it much easier for passengers to travel and find their way around the timetable.

At the same time, passenger infrastructure is being modernised - VAS "Latvijas dzelzceļš" is renovating passenger platforms to provide more convenient and safer access to trains. Vivi encourages passengers to keep an eye on the timetable changes due to various maintenance works.
